University of North Carolina - Charlotte

This up-and-coming university is the home of the 49ers – more recently known as the Niner Nation! “Charlotte” as its fan prefers to call it since they do not want to be mistaken for UNC-Chapel Hill, has grown at a breathtaking speed in the past five years. In 2002, when Jeff and Kim first came to the campus, there were little more than 18,000 students. The 2007-08 census has edged past the 22,000 mark. The entire “skyline” of the campus has changed tremendously in those five years. Research, nursing, engineer, and a new student activity center are adding to the academic and landscaping nuance. Architecture and Engineering are two of the largest draws to this picturesque campus.

Here in North Carolina, UNCC is known as a “suitcase college” because of the thousands of commuter student or those who live in a 100-mile radius of campus. Because of that, much of the general student activities are done during the week. UNCC was chosen to “test” a four-day school week – where Fridays were set aside mainly for labs and some freshmen or specialized classes. Our main Bible study on campus is held on Wednesday nights. This year we have had record attendance and a strong Christian student presence. In the midst of that, our students are bringing roommates and classmates that are in need of Jesus’ saving power.

Lunch meetings, coffee breaks, and one-on-one discipleship times are some of the most popular and enjoyable interactions with students on a weekly basis. Anytime a student can be promised free food, it’s a definite plus for them! There are several events that we host for the students during the year: a Thanksgiving feast always held a week before their Thanksgiving break. Several women from our local church provide the turkey, ham, casseroles, and desserts for this event. Before the Christmas break (which now is called Winter Break by many campuses and public institutions around our nation) we host a Progressive Dinner. Four families from a local church will provide the appetizers, soup/salad, main course, or dessert stop for our students. It’s always an incredible time to acquaint ourselves with students on a different level. Procrastination Stations (snack and beverage table during exam week), Spring Retreats, Game Nights, and other activities keep the Abernethys and their students hopping! CBF-UNCC is an ever-changing organization in diversity, but always solid in the biblical principles that are daily carried to this spiritually-needy campus!
